  • Notes
    • After analysis of DNA matches and a long journey through paper records, we now know that John Coulbourn Strong used the alias William J. James to enlist in the British Army in 1915 and again when he met and married Grace Brewer in 1925. For an extensive report on his story, see the attached history.
    • Information from Hank's Birth Certificate:

      William J. James
      1103 Halycon Ave., Nashville, TN
      White
      42 Years Old
      Birthplace: Colorado
      Occupation: Auto Mechanic (spelled Machanic?)

The address is the same as his mother's, and from what I have heard from Hank, William did not actually leave Oklahoma for his birth, so the address is incorrect.

Lists birth as 1885 in Colorado, marriage to Grace James Brewer in 1925, when he was 40 years old.

I called the Clerk's Office on 27 AUG 2012. There is a record of the marriage between William J. James and Grace Brewer, and if we want to get a physical copy of the marriage license we can. However, the clerk confirmed over the phone that it does not contain parents names or place of birth for William James, and just lists him as a resident of Picher, OK.
    • The William James who married Theresa Lampshire was never in Oklahoma according to his niece per this email I received:

      "Dear Erik

You came to me thru Annett, and Kathy Lampshire. The William J. James you found on
the Lampshire tree was my Uncle. I'm sorry to say he is not the one you are looking for.
I know there was another James family in Colorado about the same time and they had
boys with the same names as mine.

John E.James and Emma Lampshire had 4 boys you may find at a later date. I will give
you some info on them so if you find them you will know they are not the one y ou are looking for.

Richard Henry James b Unity Wi.4/30/1877 married Mildred d 3/2/1918 Leadville, Co
George Farr James b Brownsville, Co. married Annie Sullivan d Bremerton
      8/1/1879
Raymond Roy James b July 11/1891 Leadville, Co. d Denver. Co/ 2/26/1954 Married Agnes Powers
      Sept/1916 Buena Vilsta Co/

William John James b 4/23/1883 Leadville Co. married Theresa Lampshire, Leadville, co. They
moved to Salt Lake City ,Utah raised five children there and John died there March 1953.

I'm sure none of the boys spent any time in Oklahoma. George worked in the shipyards. William John
worked for Union Oil all his time in Salt Lake. Like I mentioned there was another James family
in Colorado (also miners I believe) Sorry I could not help you more. It's disappointing when you find
something that looks like a close match. Good Luck in finding them

      Mary Jane Coloroso (Rays daughter)"
    • Summary of current leads as of March 2013:

      - The William J. James born to John James and Emma Lampshire in 1883 does not appear to be ours. After extensive research and contact with family members, he married cousin Theresa Lampshire and moved to Salt Lake City, UT. No evidence that he ever was in Utah or had a second marriage.

      - There is a William J. James born to Eliza James in Nov. 1882. On the 1900 census he 17 years old and living with his mother (54) and siblings Lila (16), Edward (14), and Alice 13) in Central City, Gilpin, Colorado. His father is not listed and may be deceased. William James, born around 1883, listed on 1920 Census as 37 years old, living in Arizona with wife Sophia C. James (54). William is listed as born in Colorado; Sophia was born in Denmark, came to the US in 1869 and naturalized in 1880. Profession is listed as Mill Man in a Gold Mine. Parents are both listed as from England. He died in Arizona, lists Sophia as wife and Eliza as mother, so this is the same person and not ours (http://genealogy.az.gov/azdeath/071/10710424.pdf)

      - William J. James, born in Mississippi (which would conflict with birth certificate for Hank). Listed on 1910 census as a single lodger living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

      - William James listed in 1885 Colorado census as 1 year old in Pitkin, Colorado. Father (Thomas, 27) was born in Pennsylvania and Mother (J, 21) was born in England. It appears that Thomas' parents were both born in Wales, although this is hard to read. Father is listed as a cook.

      - 1910 and 1920 Census has a William John James born in 1885 in England, but moving to the US in 1902. So, would conflict with birth certificate, but at least possible. Living in Leadville City, CO with his wife Mable and son Richard W. Both parents are listed as being from England. 1920 and 1930 cCensus show that William and Mabel are still married with three children, eventually moving from Colorado to Montana. So, this is not him.

The 1920 Census has a William J. James, born about 1883 in Colorado, living in Oak Park, Illinois with his wife Grace A. James. Father and Mother are both listed as Ireland. I can't find either of them on the 1930 Census.
    • School records for three children of a William James in Picher, Oklahoma:

      https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSMQ-VQMR-N?i=789&cc=1926701

      Sybile Faulkner, 17
      Warren James, 10
      Harold James, 8

      https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSMQ-KS8S-G?i=549&cc=1926701

1940 Census shows a Maud James, 47 born circa 1893, widowed, living in California with her two sons Warren, 16, and Harold, 14. Their last residence is listed as Picher, Oklahoma. This is almost certainly the same family that enrolled their children Warren and Harold James in school in Picher with a parent listed as William James.

1930 Census shows same family just across the border in Kansas, intact, with a William D James as father: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GR41-Q99?i=14&cc=1810731. This William D. James was born in 1888 in Oklahoma. It seems likely they just lived in Picher around the same time frame as our William J. James.
